Almonis and Lisore : historical context
The war of Devolution or war of Flandres In 1667, the king of Spain died without having paid the dowry promised to Louis XIV for his marriage with the infanta Marie-Therese. According to the law of devolution, the king of France then claimed for his wife the Flandres, the Brabant and Franche Comté. This custom gave priority, in matters of inheritance, to children born from a first marriage. New king of Spain Charles II, arisen from a second marriage, refuses to sell these lands to the French kingdom. It is the very first war of Louis XIV. |
At the court Louis XIV settles down his residence in Versailles - but he will only really live there from 1682. |
The theater - Performance of Panulphe ou L’Imposteur, by Molière (repeat of Tartuffe which will again be forbidden). |
